Red-hot Novak Djokovic will attempt to land his fourth title of the year when he takes on Borna Coric in the final of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday.

It was also the second time this year that 21-year-old Coric has defeated Federer.

The 21-year-old Coric will face Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final after the Serb thrashed Alexander Zverev 6-2 6-1, leapfrogging Federer to No.2 in the world rankings.

Djokovic held the advantage to seal the victory and set up a semi-final clash with Germany's Alexander Zverev, who became the fifth singles player to qualify for November's ATP Finals with a 6-4 6-4 win over Kyle Edmund.

From the beginning of their match, Federer's shot-making was below-par as he missed often on straightforward points or after long rallies, in which Coric was superb.

Djokovic saved set point in the opener before taking control of the tie break and the second set to dump out the South African seventh seed.

A miss-hit Federer forehand gifted Coric the opening break of the second set for a 2-0 lead, before Coric pulled off an excellent lob and smashed an ace down the tee to move clear at 5-3.

The Croatian stunned the 20-time grand slam champion 6-4 6-4 in what was an unusually error-strewn performance from Federer.

The 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 11th-seeded Briton seals Zverev's place in the season-ending ATP Finals in London next month, which bring together the top eight men.

"It's the best I've ever seen him play, there were no lapses in concentration, he struck the ball beautifully and there wasn't much Federer could do", said former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski afterwards, as reported by the British media.

"I think, quite similar in style of play to today's match". Another two wins for the title this weekend will take the Serb to within just 215 points of overtaking Nadal, a scenario that seemed unthinkable four months ago.

Federer takes to the court second on Saturday's schedule, which has a more pleasant feel to it from a start time perspective, with this starting at 1pm United Kingdom time, after Alexander Zverev versus Novak Djokovic, which begins at 930am.

"He (Zverev) has improved a lot, and he has established himself as a top player", Djokovic said.

"Serving, I think, it's okay, could be even a little bit better".

He had lost his only previous meeting with Zverev, in the 2017 Internazionali d'Italia final, and faced early pressure on Saturday as the youngster started strongly.
