England couldn't suffer the same fate if they aren't more clinical in front of goal as the team squandered multiple opportunities during last night's 0-0 draw with Croatia.

Eric Dier and Harry Kane hit the woodwork on a night when Marcus Rashford wasted two great chances, meaning the opportunity to exact World Cup revenge went begging as the Group A4 encounter ended goalless on a odd night for all involved.

Southgate moved away from the three-man defence that served him well on England's run to the World Cup semi-finals to try a more flexible system in Rijeka. We were a real threat (against Croatia). Having an extra player in the attacking phase would help Southgate's side create more chances and maintain possession more efficiently.

Andrej Kramaric's bouncing strike was stopped by Pickford before Rashford, struggling to get into the game, could not make the most of a Kane pass that opened up space down the left.

"The fact is that Modric is the best player in the world officially now and we just lacked that composure, the guile and that know-how that I think a couple of that Croatia team have in [Mario] Mandzukic, [Ivan] Rakitic, [Luka] Modric and [Ivan] Perisic - they've played in Champions League finals and been around the block in the highest quality games and that's what England are just lacking at the moment", Neville told Sky Sports.

The only chance in the first half fell to Dier, who glanced his header against the far post after a Jordan Henderson corner.

Rashford tried his luck from distance and Perisic stung the palms of Pickford when play resumed, before England struck the woodwork again.

Better chances would fall Rashford's way shortly before the hour mark, but he got his first-time shot all wrong when he only had Dominik Livakovic to beat in the Croatia goal, before being denied by the young keeper on his second cap when attempting to curl it out of reach.

England captain Harry Kane dismissed suggestions he needs a rest, saying he does not think his "game has dipped".

Uefa forced the match to be played behind closed doors as part of a punishment handed down to Croatia after a swastika was marked onto the pitch before a match against Italy in 2015.

"We could easily hear the ones on the hill", said Dier.

There was also a glimpse of the future as 18-year-old substitute Sancho became the first player born this millennium to play for the senior side, while 21-year-old Ben Chilwell impressed.

After 77 minutes, Jadon Sancho made his England debut, coming on for Sterling, and another change followed as Marko Livaja replaced Rebic for the home side.
