Six days after Hurricane Michael roared ashore, wreaking havoc on the Florida Panhandle, a bit of good news has emerged in hard-hit Mexico Beach.

US President Donald Trump hands out bottles of water as he tour damage from Hurricane Michael in Lynn Haven, Florida.

"Rick Scott, your governor, has done an incredible job, and all of your people have been fantastic - working with FEMA, working with the first responders, and always law enforcement", Trump said Monday before boarding a helicopter for an aerial tour from Marine One over areas destroyed by the storm.

More than 230,000 are still without power Monday morning, unable to fend off the stifling heat. "That's really what this was", he said.

At least 18 deaths in four states have been blamed on Michael, which crashed into the Panhandle last Wednesday as one of the most powerful storms on record to hit the continental United States. They were greeted by Republican Governor Rick Scott, FEMA Administrator William "Brock" Long, Congressman Matt Gaetz, (R), and other officials.

The president praised Scott, who is running for the Senate in next month's tense midterm elections, for "doing an incredible job".

Mr Trump thanked first responders for their work in the aftermath of the deadly hurricane.

Trump said: "What's the percentage?"

"There is something there, man-made or not".

Asked in the interview if she loves her husband, Mrs Trump said: 'Yes, we are fine.

The number of dead was expected to rise, but authorities scrapped plans for setting up a temporary morgue, indicating they had yet to see signs of mass casualties from the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S.in almost 50 years. "Who knows? That's what the numbers are". Trump also visited a farm and met with growers of cotton and pecans to talk about the storm-related losses they suffered.

More than 150,000 customers in the state remained without power as of Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

"We still haven't gotten into the hardest-hit areas", he said, adding: "Very few people live to tell what it's like to experience storm surge, and unfortunately in this country we seem to not learn the lesson".

Several hospitals were damaged by Michael, including three in Panama City alone, and Florida is planning to set up a long-term field hospital in the north-west, the Miami Herald reports.

In Panama City, one of the hardest-hit communities, Fire Chief Alex Baird said search and rescue teams were now in "recovery mode" after largely giving up hope of finding any more survivors.

"Everyone has come together just helping everyone out".

The US Army, National Guard and police have been crisscrossing the area, which at dusk goes dark.
