The first of a few confirmed cases in the area was reported in the last couple of weeks, but there is no large increase in cases at this time, said Chris Steward of Sedgwick County's Division of Health. There is no way you can get the flu.

Side effects of the vaccine usually include redness, swelling, and soreness where you were injected (if you go the shot route), but "a small percent of individuals, around one or two percent, can get a fever that can last for 24 or rarely 48 hours", Schaffner says.

However, rates of vaccinations are going down, and US Surgeon General Jerome Adams says the dip was partly to blame for the record-high death toll from flu a year ago - 80,000 people.

For years, doctors have stressed the importance of vaccinating adults and children against the flu.

During the 2017-18 flu season - the deadliest flu season in four decades - 80,000 Americans died, including 180 children. In Kansas, 193 deaths statewide were directly attributed to the flu.

Influenza or the flu is an illness caused by a virus.

Hillsborough County suffered the states only two flu or flu-like outbreaks during the first week of the season, the report said.

"With any medication or vaccine, people are going to have concerns", said Dr. Jean Moorjani, a board-certified pediatrician at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, in a news release.

Flu vaccinations are recommended for anyone six months and older, unless otherwise directed by a physician.

A Florida child who hadn't received a flu vaccination died from the virus in late September or early October, according to the state's department of health. A sliding fee scale based on proof of income may be applied for uninsured children.
