Lee’s Distant Descendant Called Trump Out For His Comments Supporting The General

He called Gen. Lee "a true great fighter" and a "great general", and claimed President Lincoln developed a "phobia" of Lee. In reality, though, they were characterizing a lengthy story created to heap praise on locally-born Union General Grant as being a story focused on praising not locally-born Confederate General Lee, and that is simply not the case. But in introducing Grant, Trump heaped praise upon another Civil War general from the Confederacy: Lee.

"Last night I was disheartened to hear Donald Trump, our president, make comments about Robert E. Lee as a great general, as an honorable man", Lee said. Grant was not viewed as a great general but he ended up beating Lee anyway.

Robert E. Lee was born in Virginia. In fact, Trump was talking about Ulysses S. Grant, the heavy-drinking general who eventually led the Union to victory against the South.

Trump, at least, was magnanimous, thanking NBC for the correction. But he made the statement in the context of talking about how hard it was for President Abraham Lincoln to defeat him.

Grant was born in OH, and went on to become the country's 19th president after the Civil War. Grant was from Ohio; Lee was from Virginia.

Trump accused media-specifically NBC News, who later issued a correction-of twisting and cutting his full remarks made during an October 12 rally where he praised a number of Ohioans. "An attached video clip lacked the full context for Trump's remark". "Robert E. Lee fought for the continued enslavement of black bodies".

Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally in Lebanon, Ohio, on Friday.

News reports from other media had similar one-sided headlines in which they included Trump's initial quote about Lee and left out the end of his anecdote. They said, 'Don't take him.

If there's some solace in this, it's that the corrected tweet - in a rare instance - is getting more retweets than the original, incorrect tweet.

"He started to win". "And he's finally being recognized as a great general". Calls to remove statues honoring confederate figures inspired the deadly 2017 in Charlottesville.

Trump's stance on monuments to Confederate leaders like Lee ignited a movement previous year to remove those statues of leaders who fought to preserve slavery. "Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our handsome statues and monuments", Trump tweeted in August 2017, just days after Heather Heyer was killed by a white supremacist in Charlottesville.
