Trump says he isn't giving Saudis cover over Khashoggi situation

Pressure is growing on Saudi Arabia to give a full explanation of what happened to him.

Earlier on Tuesday Police claimed to have found "certain evidence" that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate, before the Saudi consul made a sudden departure from a Turkish airport.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey should "reveal everything" they know about Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance, a top United Nations human rights official has said while demanding a "thorough and impartial" probe into the whereabouts of the dissident Saudi journalist.

What has come out of the Pompeo meeting?

He has told the media that Riyadh was being treated as "guilty until proven innocent", adding that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman has denied any knowledge of Khashoggi's fate.

Pompeo said the Saudis would investigate and hold themselves accountable, but Saudi's royal family is notoriously opaque.

"My assessment from these meetings is that there is a serious commitment to determine all the facts and ensure accountability, including accountability for Saudi Arabia's senior leaders or senior officials", Pompeo said in a statement.

Mr Pompeo is expected in Turkey later. "No matter how good a lie sounds, I don't think people can accept it when they know it's a lie".

Many members of the US Congress, which has long had a testy relationship with Saudi Arabia, have issued strong criticism of the kingdom over the case.

"The president is willingly and knowingly doing the counter messaging for the Saudi kingdom", noted Washington Post national security reporter Greg Miller in a tweet on Tuesday.
