Red Sox Concerns Fade as They Roll Into the World Series

Behind a caption saying "lil pregame video work" flashed clips of Bregman and two Astros teammates smashing back-to-back-to-back homers off right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, the Boston Red Sox's designated Game 3 starter, during a game almost four months earlier.

The ace right-hander had pitched 24 scoreless innings over his previous three starts with his team facing postseason elimination, and he came in 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA in five potential elimination games during his career.

Verlander's 13 career postseason wins rank fourth in Major League Baseball history, trailing only Andy Pettitte (19), John Smoltz (15) and Tom Glavine (14). The high fly balls that seemed to die at the wall for the Astros, but sail over it for the Red Sox. And much-maligned Jackie Bradley Jr. became an MVP. They out-hit the Astros this series.

The World Series is to begin on Tuesday at Fenway Park, with the Sox hosting Games 1 and 2, and then Games 6 and 7 if needed. He had a grand slam in Game 3 and go-ahead homer in Game 4 and finished with nine RBI in the series.

The home team won exactly one game in this series.

This series is an entirely different animal then the last one. His nine strikeouts are a postseason best in his 11-year career. In four save situations, two against NY and two against Houston, Kimbrel allowed runs in each of them.

Can the Astros keep their season alive?

Discovering that Kimbrel was tipping his pitches doesn't address a variety of other noticeable issues, such as his lack of command, but it's certainly a start. Kimbrel said he and pitching coach Dana LeVangie identified a few problematic areas - "some stuff [he'd] been struggling with for a while" - after his near-catastrophic outing in Game 4. Kimbrel discussed the issue with both Gagne and Levangie before Game 5, and Cora detected a difference during the ninth inning. West's decision proved costly in a tight game and MLB's replay center stood by his call due to insufficient camera angles. That trend continued in game five.

In his last appearance, Price went four-and-two-thirds innings.

After Gonzales hit a solo home run in the seventh, the Astros put a run on board for Josh Reddick. "This is what we set out to do when we come to spring training". It's hard to find a bigger victor than that. The Astros ended up losing, 8-6, and trail the series, three games to one.

Devers connected in the sixth for a 4-0 lead.

There's just no excuse for this poor performance. Boston leads Houston 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Coming into Game 2 of the ALCS, Price's teams had never won a game in which he started in the postseason. On only three days of rest, Price simply dominated in the most-difficult circumstances he's faced in years.

So who wins every playoff game?

Baseball can be a game of luck and that proved to be the case for Bregman.

If Benintendi misses the ball on his dive in Game 4, Bregman gets credited with a game-winning, three-run double that ties the series. The problem is Boston outfielder Mookie Betts also was trying to catch it.

He allowed one hit, walked none and struck out one. Once he got on base, the Red Sox would retire the hitters behind him.
