Tottenham didn't buy in summer window because targets were 'unaffordable' - Pochettino

Here are the XI men Mauricio Pochettino will trust to get the job done.

Chairman Daniel Levy hinted this week in a meeting with the Tottenham fans that he was content with the club's summer activity and Pochettino agreed with him.

Spurs deserved the points, even if their defenders will feel indebted to the excellence of Hugo Lloris, who made three valuable saves from Marko Arnautovic in the second half. Instead, other players in this squad have stepped up when it mattered, rising to the occasion and pulling them through.

"The form of the players sometimes change, it is hard to explain", Pochettino told reporters in his post-match news conference.

Tottenham showed serious interest in Youri Tielemans but Monaco were not doing business. I think it's not only us - all the clubs and managers want to sign players, must refresh the squad.

"But if you can not achieve what you need or want, then to sign because you need to make happy people or act like all the clubs, I think that's not common sense".

'Maybe you have the money but not enough to sign what you need or want. Then you need to move on'.

Spurs' victor at West Ham came when a Moussa Sissoko was converted by Erik Lamela and Sissoko, who has struggled to win over the Spurs fans since arriving from Newcastle, got a standing ovation when he was substituted in the second half.

Tottenham will still endeavor on without Dele Alli, Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen.

"It's true in previous seasons we've struggled a bit in this month", he said.

"At the same time we are realistic and with all the circumstance we suffered in the summer, with the World Cup and the players that arrived the week before the start of the season, the challenge was bigger for everyone". But if you say to me we were so clever and are geniuses because we didn't sign [anyone], and now after nine games it's the best ever start in the Premier League, I'm not going to be the kind of person to say: 'Yes, we are geniuses'. Of those seven games, only two are home games, yes both still at Wembley; but outside of a long trip to face PSV Eindhoven, they only leave London once over those 21 days as Spurs go to the west Midlands to face Wolverhampton.
