"But what is racist?".

NBC's Megyn Kelly swiftly apologized Tuesday for a morning show segment that questioned why dressing up in blackface for a Halloween costume is wrong. "Like, back when I was a kid, that was okay, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character".

Kelly wondered aloud during a conversation about universities putting pressure on students not to wear costumes that might be deemed offensive.

No matter how much you want to be Diana Ross for Halloween, as Megyn used as an example (recalling a controversy when RHONY star Luann deLesseps dressed as the star), it's off limits.

"But on Halloween?" Kelly asked. "There are strict rules on what you may and may not wear by someone who thinks is the boss of you", the Today show host said. "Whatever happened to manners and polite society?"

"But on Halloween? On Halloween you've got guys running around with fake axes coming out of their head", Kelly replied. "It's going to be jarring". She insisted over and over again that Santa, a fictional character who does not actually visit every home in the world with his magic flying reindeer, has to be white.

"I have not seen it".

Soboroff didn't hesitate before saying, "It sounds pretty racist to me", but he was quickly pushed aside by Rivers.

Acting on advice from Prince Harry , the Duchess of Sussex will not be taking part in today's royal engagements on Fraser Island. The duke and duchess are expected to catch some of the final events when they return to the harbour city on Friday.

W. Kamau Bell pointed out the dissonance between Kelly's past insistence that Santa Claus is white and her comments on blackface costume. "Take it from a big-hearted boy who just wanted to show his love for Nipsey Russell on the worst Halloween of my life".

One person said: "WTF it's never ok when was she a child 100yrs ago".

"I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry", wrote Kelly in an internal email obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

"Blackface is part of a history of dehumanization, of denied citizenship, and of efforts to excuse and justify state violence".

"I can not believe the ignorance on this in 2018", author and television host Padma Lakshmi wrote. "You are on national television", "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi said in a tweet directed at Kelly. "This is so damaging". What she really means is that she grew up in the 1970s, before social media, in an overwhelmingly white NY suburb, so she never had to listen to the opinions of anyone who might give her insight into why blackface was never okay.

Another commenter stated: "We stopped listening to this white woman's opinions before she even had one".

"I can't keep up with the number of people we're offending just by being normal people", Kelly concluded.
