Officials say 18 cases of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, Passaic County was confirmed.

There have been 18 cases of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of NY, the New Jersey Health Department said in a statement.

Adenovirus, according to the health department, are a family of viruses that often cause mild illness, particularly in young children.

Kirgan added: 'The combination of a worse strain of adenovirus together with a fragile population has led to a more severe outbreak'.

This strain is associated with disease in communal living facilities, the officials said.

The facility has been told it can't admit any new patients until the outbreak ends. On Sunday, they said they found "minor hand washing deficiencies". A team was sent back Tuesday.

This is an ongoing outbreak investigation.

The outbreak occurred at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, in northern New Jersey. Still, people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing severe illness from adenovirus, according to the CDC.

Wanaque Center is a pediatric and adult short- and long-term care facility.
