Forty Percent Of Rare 'Polio-Like' Cases Are In The Midwest

The CDC has received 155 reports of patients under investigation for acute flaccid myelitis, up from the 127 suspected cases it announced Oct 16.

There are four possible cases of a polio-like illness called acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in MI.

"The latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows no change in the number of confirmed cases - 62 cases in 22 states".

Children under the age of four have seen the most recent onsets ailment, but cases of AFM in children as old as 18 have also been reported.

The condition affects the nervous system and affects fewer than 1 million people a year.

That's an increase of 28 cases in a matter of days.

The classic presentation is sudden or rapid onset of weakness of the arms, legs, or facial muscles. He focuses on pediatric infectious disease, and says children could be more at risk because they have a weaker immune system.

In very rare cases, it is possible that the process in the body that triggers AFM may also trigger other serious neurologic complications that could lead to death.

"Make sure you keep your children up to date on their vaccines", he said. "And, if your children develop weakness in their arms or their legs, especially if they've had a cold, take them to their doctor immediately".
