Oscar forms, strengthens in Central Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Oscar is now the eighth hurricane in the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season.

It had 75 mph maximum sustained winds that extended outward only 15 miles. Oscar is still moving toward the west at 16 miles per hour.

The weather service said TS Oscars closest point of approach inside three days was expected to be 487 miles to the east south east of the island about 5am on Tuesday.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect. The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center forecasts Oscar to be a strong tropical storm by the end of the weekend and a hurricane early in the coming week.

Oscar is forecast to continue to strengthen through Monday night, then gradually weaken in the open Atlantic. "Near or just beyond 96 hours, the shear is forecast to increase substantially and Oscar should begin to make the transition to an extratropical cyclone". The tropical depression that would eventually become Hurricane Kate formed southeast of the Bahamas on November 8th. The storm made landfall along the Florida Panhandle (as seen in the top video), causing the most damage in Mexico Beach and Panama City.

Subtropical storms have less defined and cooler centres than tropical storms.

The storm also hit Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia.
