His decision was widely criticized overseas and by Democrats at home, who said that while imperfect, the pact had placed the Iranian nuclear program under the tightest scrutiny ever.

Washington has indicated that it will increase its pressure on Iran gradually rather than forcing an immediate crisis as President Trump's renewed oil and financial sanctions take effect tomorrow.

Senior Iranian officials have dismissed concerns about the impact to its economy.

On Monday, Tehran greeted the sanctions with air defense drills and an acknowledgement from President Hassan Rouhani that the nation faces a "war situation".

As part of the new round of measures, the White House has warned Iran's customers they must reduce their purchases of oil to zero or face USA penalties, although it has issued 180-day waivers to eight "jurisdictions" that will allow them to continue importing Iranian oil. America should learn that it can not use the language of force against Iran ...

"That's the goal, that's the mission, and that's what we will achieve on behalf of the president".

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commander added, "Our enemies intend to isolate us like an island but today the page has turned and Americans themselves are being gradually isolated, as even their traditional allies" are distancing themselves from the U.S. "The US - and not Iran - is isolated", Zarif said in a tweet.

"The United States remains open to reaching a new, more comprehensive deal with Iran that forever blocks its path to a nuclear weapon, addresses the entire range of its malign actions, and is worthy of the Iranian people", Trump said in the presidential statement.

China's Xi promises tax cuts, other help to entrepreneurs
Trump has also threatened to extend the tariffs to all Chinese imports if the meeting in Argentina fails to produce "a good deal". Trump said the American economy is doing well and he has been receiving congratulatory message from across the world.

But proponents as well as the other parties to the deal - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the European Union - have vehemently defended it.

The deal had seen most worldwide financial and economic sanctions on Iran lifted in return for Tehran curbing its disputed nuclear activity under United Nations surveillance.

"No one's going to argue that Secretary Pompeo is not tough on Iran", Pompeo said on Fox, pushing back against those who want further sanctions on Iranian banking by saying that "the Iranian banks that engage in sanction able behavior will be sanctioned by the Department of Treasury". The U.S. says the sanctions are not aimed at toppling the government, but at persuading it to radically change its policies, including its support for regional militant groups and its development of long-range ballistic missiles.

Iran's president has said his country will "proudly bypass" Donald Trump's "illegal" and "unjust" sanctions by selling oil.

Despite this, Iran will continue to sell some oil as Washington said on Friday it would temporarily allow eight importers to keep buying Iranian supplies. But Brent crude was steady at $72.83 by 1230 GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 27 cents, or 0.4 percent, at $62.87 a barrel.

The current crude oil selloff may have overextended itself, with U.S. crude prices declining for four straight weeks into the 62.50 region, and the next logical resistance zone for a bullish recovery will be seen at the previous support zone near 66.30, while continued selling will see fresh support from last April's low of 61.75.

The reimposition of the sanctions came as the U.S.is focused on Tuesday's congressional and gubernatorial elections.
