Amazon Reportedly Honing In On Northern Virginia Site For HQ2

Crystal City seems to the front-runner in the drawn-out competition to win Amazon's $5 billion second headquarters, widely known as HQ2. Topics such as the timing for a public announcement and immediate office needs are reportedly being ironed out.

The newspaper said the talks were so far advanced that one of the neighbourhood's biggest real estate developers, JBG Smith, had already pulled some of its properties off the market, and officials were considering announcing the move later this month. Even before the Post's report was published on Saturday, speculative investors have been snapping up shares in the publicly traded REIT.

The talks were described as more in-depth than the company has had with other cities that made the tech giant's HQ2 short list. "You're not doing Crystal City, Va. any favours".

Amazon announced a year ago that the retail giant was looking to open a second headquarters somewhere in the US, bringing with it as many as 50,000 new jobs.

The discussions add speculation that the site in Virginia, that many considered the favorite for what Amazon is promising as 50,000 high-paying jobs, in honing in on the prize.

Northern Virginia has always been seen as a favorite for Amazon HQ2, a $5 billion second headquarters that will have room for up to 50,000 employees. Amazon declined to comment on his remarks.

Washington-area leaders believe the project is theirs to lose, and that Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia would all benefit economically.

Amazon's site selection process remains shrouded in secrecy.

Amazon has said that economic incentives will be an important factor in its decision.
