Anto, who joined the team of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) voluntarily, also worked for search and rescue operations in September's natural disaster and tsunami in Indonesia's Palu region.

"We made a decision to extend it three days", beginning on Monday, search and rescue agency (Basarnas) chief Muhammad Syaugi told a news conference.

Syachrul Anto had also been one of the main divers involved in the search for an Air Asia jet that crashed off Borneo in late 2014.

The head of Indonesia's transportation safety committee (KNKT) said 69 hours of recorded data from 19 flights, including the one that crashed, had been downloaded successfully from a partly damaged flight data recorder recovered on Thursday.

Earlier it was revealed that Lion Air dispatched one of its engineers on the fatal flight.

The committee has been receiving help from their American counterparts at the US National Transportation Safety Board, but will be getting additional assistance from Australia, Utomo added.

The investigation has been marred by strong currents.

The accident has also resurrected concerns about Indonesia's poor air safety record which until recently saw its carriers facing years-long bans from entering European Union and U.S. airspace.

Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade.
