Divisive Trump era ushers record number of women into US Congress

Her victory in the US midterm elections on Monday makes her the youngest woman ever to win election to Congress.

Women have never held more than 84 of the 435 seats in the House.

In January, both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House will feature a far different makeup than previous years, as voter turnout surged this cycle.

Representing Minnesota, she will be the first Congress member to wear a hijab or head scarf.

Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party will become the first Muslim women in Congress.

"Tonight, we reaffirm what an awesome state that we live in", he said in his victory speech.

Democrats Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland will become the first Native American women elected to Congres.

"This is truly the year of the woman everywhere", Tom Perez, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, said at an election night party in Washington as results trickled in on Tuesday night.

Amid a wave of female candidates running for office, Tlaib scored a victory in Michigan's 13th Congressional District, setting her up to be the first Muslim-American woman in Congress.

Delivering her victory speech, she said: "This is a movement for social, economic and racial justice in the United States of America".

A record number of women were elected to the US House on Tuesday, almost two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Davids' win in Kansas against GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder was a pickup for Democrats, which projects to gain control of the House.

In races still too close to call, Abrams, if elected, would become the first female African-American governor in US history, and in Arizona's competitive Senate race, the state will elect either Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as the state's first woman to serve in the chamber.

As of 2:45 a.m., 95 women have won seats in the 116th Congress, with 4 races yet to be called in which both candidates are female, meaning there will be at least 99 women reporting to work at the Capitol in January of next year.
