Missouri voters were confronted with three choices for permitting the use of medical marijuana - two that amended the state constitution and one that would do so by creating a new statute. Before Tuesday's vote 20 of the 50 states allow it for medical use.

MI voters legalized recreational marijuana use for residents over the age of 21 with retail sales of the product subject to a 10 percent tax. Residents would be allowed to grow up to 12 marijuana plants at their home without a license or purchase pot from a licensed business.

A ballot measure in North Dakota would make it legal for residents 21 or older to grow, possess and use marijuana in whatever quantity they want.

As of late Tuesday night with 43 per cent of polls reporting, MI voters appeared to vote in favour of legalizing recreational cannabis for anyone 21 years old or older in the state, with about 57 per cent of voters approving the ballot measure while 42 per cent voted against it.
