An Australian man attacked by a shark at Cid Harbour off Australia's north-eastern coast, close to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, has died overnight.

Numerous charter boat operators were sensitive enough about the attacks to refuse the ABC's attempts yesterday to charter a boat out to Cid Harbour, amid concern about adverse media attention on the region.

A MAN has tragically died after being mauled by a shark at Cid Harbour, in Queensland's Whitsundays.

Dr. Daniel Christidis, a urologist and researcher at Melbourne's Austin Hospital, was among 10 pals who set out from Airlie Beach in Cid Harbour on a rented yacht for a five-day cruise through Whitsunday Islands, Police Inspector Steve O'Connell said.

Temporary signs would be urgently installed and permanent signs would follow deterring people from swimming in the popular anchorage location, according to the statement.

They anchored 14 miles away, planning to spend their first night in the popular vacation spot, where Christidis took turns with a woman standing on a paddle board or swimming in the harbor Monday afternoon.

"Definitely one of the more hard ones for everyone involved", McCauley said.

Justine Barwick was bitten by a shark at Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays in September.

Justine Barwick, a 46-year-old tourist, was attacked September 19 while swimming from a yacht in Cid Harbor and is recovering.

That attack had occured off Dent Island and 60-year-old tourist Patricia Trumbull survived lacerations to her buttocks and major blood loss.

In September, two shark attacks occurred within a day of each other.

"We need to be looking at the baitfish movement, we need to be looking at the water conditions ... any other factors that might be happening in that area that is obviously changing shark activity", Dr Chapman said.

Following those attacks, local authorities conducted a culling of sharks in the area, capturing and killing at least four, including a 3.7 metre tiger shark.

"I feel devastated for the family and friends of this young man, I know that he would have received the best of care available from the Queensland Health Service, including RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter crew and my heart goes out to all involved", Craig Barwick said in a statement.

Australia had not experienced a fatal shark attack since April 17 last year and its average of two deadly shark attacks per year that was recorded in recent decades has dropped.
