The moment Irish jockey Ryan Moore noticed there was something wrong with the stallion he eased off and allowed the horse to slow down.

The $6.2 million race was won by Cross Counter, followed by Marmelo and A Prince of Arran.

Kerrin McEvoy claimed a third Melbourne Cup on Tuesday afternoon as Cross Counter charged down the Flemington straight to win Australia's great race.

If he forced Cliffsofmoher to continue, it is likely the young horse would have fallen on the track.

It is the fourth time in the past six years that the Cup has been shrouded by the death of horses.

"Like many of our horses that run, we'll just let the dust settle and plan for him in the new year what we are going to do", Appleby said.

A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) representative told Daily Mail Australia in a statement that the organization was calling for an investigation into the horse's death.

"It could have been worse, Ryan (Moore) could have taken a fall off him [Cliffsofmoher], someone could have been seriously injured", according to the Daily Mail.
