Republicans retained control of the Senate on Tuesday, ousting Democratic incumbents in IN and North Dakota and handing President Donald Trump a triumph by ensuring they will remain as guardians of his conservative agenda for two more years.

FOX News is projecting that the Democrats will retake the U.S. House, but the GOP will retain control of the Senate.

A majority of the 113,000 voters surveyed said the country is headed in the wrong direction.

"They (Republicans) have been trying to take Medicare away form us, our medical services, and it's important that we vote for candidates who will defend that", he said at a polling place in Tornillo, Texas.

A Democrat-controlled House was expected to pursue anti-corruption and voter-rights legislation, and hold multiple investigations on controversial aspects of the Trump administration, not least being allegations of collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russian Federation.

The nationwide survey indicated that almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote. Democratic Senate incumbents were up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri - states Trump carried by nearly 25 percentage points on average two years ago. After every two years, one third of the Senate seats are vacated and elections held.

In Virginia's 7th District, a Republican-leaning area near Richmond, Republican Rep. Dave Brat was in a tight race with Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer.

"I believe he values immigration, but he wants to make sure we're safe", said Tina Newby of Wetland, Michigan, a GOP voter.

It'll become a key question as Democrats seize control of the House and all the investigative and procedural powers that come with that. The Republican incumbent had been branded Barbara "Trumpstock" by Democrats in a race that pointed to Trump's unpopularity among college-educated women in the suburbs.

And long lines marked the first hours of voting in some precincts, including in Georgia, where some voters reported waiting up to three hours to vote in a hotly contested gubernatorial election.

Many Democrats, already benefiting from anti-Trump enthusiasm, focused on bread-and-butter issues like maintaining health insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare healthcare programs for the elderly.

In his time in office, Trump has pushed tax cuts through Congress and overseen a period of economic and jobs growth but has failed so far to deliver on presidential campaign promises to replace the Obamacare healthcare law and build a wall on the Mexican border that he has said is needed to battle illegal immigration.

What's happening in Senate races?

The short version? If the midterms go badly for him, and Trump's party loses control of the House of Representatives, he will be left in a deeply uncomfortable position, unable to pass legislation without help from his political opponents.

In the Senate, Republican Mike Braun snatched the seat from Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly, but corruption scandal-tainted Senator Bob Menendez saved his seat for the Democrats in New Jersey. If history is any guide, the party of a president with that level of support is in for a rough time in a mid-term election.

Some Democrats have vowed to force the release of his tax returns. We should also expect to hear speeches from US Senator Elizabeth Warren and Governor Charlie Baker around now.

The S&P 500 has risen 28 per cent since Trump's election in November 2016 to the eve of congressional midterm elections on Tuesday.

Trump and Republicans appeared to have the economy on their side heading into the election: Unemployment in October held at a 48-year low of 3.7 percent.

Democrats were most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield set largely in America's suburbs where more educated and affluent voters in both parties have soured on Trump's turbulent presidency, despite the strength of the national economy.

Democrats boast record diversity on the ballot. Some of the Democratic candidates had more than double the votes of their Republican challengers and were able to keep the numbers up throughout the night.

Democrats could also recapture governor's offices in several battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and OH, a potential help for the party in those states in the 2020 presidential race. "I think the public will repudiate him [Trump] by voting in a Democratic-controlled House of Representative, because they do want a check". She also backs Trump and said Republicans are moving in the right direction on health care.

The race for control of the General Assembly is shaping up, and it seems Democrats are poised to break the Republican super majority in the House.
