Oprah denounces racist robocalls mimicking her Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams

On the weekend before the gubernatorial election in Georgia, Brian Kemp - the GOP nominee for governor who also happens to be the state's chief elections secretary - opened an "investigation" into the Georgia Democratic Party in connection with a cybersecurity breach of the state voter registry. The last-minute probe is widely seen as an attempt to derail the Abrams campaign by twisting a concerned voter's complaint about alleged voting security issues, that was sent to the Democrats before they then sent it to voter protection.

Kemp is running for governor of Georgia against Democrat Stacey Abrams.

Donald Trump, who has used incendiary language in his campaign appearances over the past few weeks, appeared with Kemp in Georgia on Sunday, at a rally which Kemp pulled out of a scheduled debate with Abrams to attend.

"This political stunt from Kemp just days before the election is yet another example of why he can not be trusted and should not be overseeing an election in which he is also a candidate for governor", the state party's executive director, Rebecca DeHart, said in a statement.

Brian Kemp, Abrams' opponent, has condemned the robocalls.

The announcement amounts to "an appalling abuse of power", elections expert and associate professor of political science at University of Florida Michael P. McDonald said on Twitter Sunday.

Kemp provided few details about his accusation, other than to say, "We have asked the FBI - Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate" the possible crimes. He walked by reporters and said: "Take Two".

"Jesus don't like ugly", she said of the robocall in an Instagram video. Republicans have won every Georgia governor's race since 2002.

"It sort of jumps off the page at me as being something that probably should have been turned over to the [Georgia Bureau of Investigation] or to an appropriate district attorney to investigate", Cox told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

". There have never been crowds like this - just so you understand - in the history of politics". Abrams is trying to become the first black governor of Georgia, which is why the media has been intensely covering the race.

For one robo-call producer speaking into a microphone in what we can only assume is a dark basement, the answer is clear: an 11th-hour infusion of good old-fashioned racism. The AP also reported that through a process Kemp calls "voter roll maintenance", his office has "cancelled over 1.4 million voter registrations since 2012" and that "nearly 670,000 registrations were cancelled in 2017 alone".
