Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins election to New York’s 14th congressional district

Her win beats the previous record held by Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik, a former White House aide to president George W. Bush who was first elected to an upstate NY constituency in 2014 aged 30.

She stunned the political establishment in September, defeating a 10-term incumbent in the Democratic primary, and was unopposed on Tuesday. Women were 21 points more likely to vote for Democrats than Republicans in House races - 60 percent voted for Democrats, to 38 percent who voted for Republicans. Women held 84 out of 435 House seats, a record Aljazeera reported.

Women were also elected governors in Iowa, Maine and South Dakota for the first time, as well as in the territory of Guam.

Former Navy pilot Mikie Sherrill flipped New Jersey's 11th away from Republican Jay Webber, giving Democrats control of the district for the first time in 36 years.

The Democrats have flipped the house while the Republicans will continue to hold on to the Senate following the midterm elections in the United States. An overwhelming majority of Americans, almost 8 in 10, said it's important to elect more women to public office.
