According to a report in Variety, the show's creator Vince Gilligan is working on a new film that ties in with the much-loved show.

This is allegedly envisioned as a standalone installment in the franchise that lives in the Breaking Bad universe, however, it is not clear whether original cast members such as Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will reprise their roles.

"You want to think back on it favorably and say, 'I don't want to mess with it.' It was a flawless opportunity for all of us". The series, which ran from 2008 until 2013, told the story of White, a high school science teacher who responds to a terminal cancer diagnosis by turning into a powerful drug lord.

Gilligan will be at the helm and also serve as executive producer alongside Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein - both of whom worked on Breaking Bad and the spin-off.

The New Mexico Film Office confirmed that a film by the same name, produced by Sony, would start filming later this month, and wrap in February.

It is through the New Mexico Film Office that word of the secret project made it to the Albuquerque Journal.

If the rumored Breaking Bad film is indeed being eyed for a television debut on AMC, the move would align nicely with other recent news involving a series of Walking Dead TV movies being developed for the network.

Series creator Vince Gilligan is said to be overseeing the project, but that's about all that's being reported right now. That remains to be seen; Walt did not survive the finale, although the character could always return in a flashback or dream sequence.
