The White House suspended press access for Jim Acosta on Wednesday after the CNN reporter had a tense exchange with President Trump during a press conference. He also yanked the mic away from a White House aide who tried to take it to give it to another person.

Mr Acosta, CNN's chief White House correspondent, said he was informed by Secret Service officers that he could not enter for his scheduled 8pm broadcast.

Eventually NBC reporter Peter Alexander took the microphone and defended his fellow reporter, despite him being from a separate network, calling him a "diligent reporter" - which only proved to anger Trump more.

The interaction between Acosta and the intern was brief, and Acosta appeared to brush her arm as she reached for the microphone and he tried to hold onto it. "Pardon me, ma'am", he told her.

The incident that triggered the White House decision on Acosta had occurred during the press conference in which Trump assessed the results of Tuesday's midterm elections.

The White House's move followed a heated exchange between Trump and Acosta who refused the President's orders to sit down and clung to the microphone and persisted with questions about his views on a caravan of Central American migrants making its way to the United States border. During the confrontation, a young woman briefly attempted to get the microphone from Acosta.

"Just sit down, please", Trump told Acosta, who asked the president off mic about his description of the media as "the enemy of the people".

Ariana Grande's Full Performance of 'Thank U, Next' Is Here
She moved into more emotional territory as the song progressed, holding back tears while singing about her future wedding day. It's one thing to sing the words, "I'm so fucking grateful for my ex", and it's another to really look like you mean them.

"CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them", he added.

Looking back at Acosta, Trump added: "The way you treat [press secretary] Sarah Huckabee is frightful, and the way you treat other people is disgusting". You are a rude awful person.

There is no news as to when Mr Acosta could receive his pass for White House duties once again. This unprecedented decision is a threat to our democracy and the country deserves better. He wrote: "Secret Service just informed me I can not enter the WH grounds for my 8pm hit".

Trump took questions following Democrats flipping the House back to their party for the first time since 2010. "You are a rude, bad person, you shouldn't be working for CNN", Trump said. Acosta might have embarrassed the poor woman, but he didn't assault her.

Trump and Acosta have long have a contentious relationship as the CNN reporter often asks the president questions that seemed created to illicit a reaction from him. The way you treat other people is disgusting.

Other reporters immediately pushed back on the allegation, noting with photographic and video evidence that at no point did Acosta "place his hands on a young woman".
