McEvoy now has three Melbourne Cups after winning the race on Brew as an apprentice in 2000 and Almandin in 2016.

That's a strike rate of 20% for the group - the racing arm of Sheikh Mohammed's Darley breeding operation - which has outposts in Britain, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Ireland, France, the USA and Australia.

Saddled with 51kg, the lowest burden with Rostropovich, Cross Counter had work to do entering the final turn after jumping wide from barrier 19.

"I think we certainly should consider it", he said.

Cross Counter's historic victory was described by his British trainer, Charlie Appleby, as "everybody's dream".

Their respect was such that Australian-born McEvoy, the 2004 St Leger-winning rider on Rule Of Law, was the obvious choice to partner the late maturing Cross Counter to a historic win as William Buick, Appleby's No 1 rider, could not make the light weight.

Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed was quick to congratulate the trainer who finally ended his 30-year quest for a Melbourne Cup. I can't believe it - I'm over the moon.

The race was marred when the Aidan O'Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher broke down at the winning post the first time around, breaking its right shoulder.

The Athletic reported a month ago that Bell would qualify as a third franchise tag even if he didn't show by the deadline. But Bell might not receive the warmest welcome if he chooses to reunite with his team this month.

Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster just floated past Mars
The $58 billion company agreed as part of the SEC settlement to more closely monitor Musk's social-media commentary. In June 2017, Musk had confirmed on Twitter that Tesla was " in discussions with the government of India ".

As the first British trainer to win, he said: "I'm so be in this position to be able to train these horses".

The Irish four-year-old was a 20/1 outsider for the Melbourne Cup and rounded the bend into the home straight midway through the pack.

"This is all for Sheikh Mohammed and Godolphin, and for me to say thank you for giving me this opportunity". "It's been a very memorable day".

A Prince of Arran, who had qualified for the Cup only on Saturday when he won the Hotham Handicap on Derby Day, had been in the mix for a long time but could not match their finish, coming third.

Victory in the race worth A$7.3m (£4m) was a 12th triumph at the top Group One level in 2018 for Appleby - and those wins have been achieved in seven countries.

In the same 2014 race, import Araldo had to be euthanised because of an injury suffered when he was returning to scale.

Godolphin first entered the Melbourne Cup in 1998 with Faithful Son and has more than 900 runners a year in Australia alone. Ridden to perfection by jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who won his third Melbourne Cup, Cross Counter made up for 20 years of misery. Obviously Godolphin has been a huge supporter of mine.

"Today's tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks these horses face every time they run, and highlights that behind the gloss and glamour of Cup celebrations there is a dark reality". "Well done to Charlie and this little horse", McEvoy said.
