Passengers create stink over pungent planeload of durian

Travelers aboard a Sriwajiya Air flight from Bengkulu, in Indonesia, to Jakarta complained of the odor prior to takeoff, insisting that the airline remove the spiky, smelly fruit - of which there was almost 4,500 pounds in the cargo hold - from the flight, per The Straits Times.

Some passengers were so angry there was nearly an altercation with crew, the BBC reported.

Passengers on an Indonesian airplane almost came to fisticuffs with the flight crew on Monday because they could smell the stench of two tons durian in the cargo area.

An Indonesian plane was temporarily grounded after passengers complained about an overwhelming smell of durian in the cabin.

In April, the stench of rotting durian in a library at Melbourne's RMIT University led to a mass evacuation.

Passengers on the flight demanded the fruit be unloaded before the plane took off due to the terrible stench.

The durian fruit has been banned from public transport and hotels in some countries because of its "stinky" smell, which has been described by food writer Richard Sterling as "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock".
