"It's very chaotic. It's a very bad fire", Officer Ryan Lambert of the California Highway Patrol said of the evacuation.

California is experiencing one of its worst fire years ever, with 251,610 hectares burned through Sunday in areas covered by Cal Fire, almost twice the amount during the same period of 2017 and almost triple the five-year average.

Butte County Sheriff's Office ordered evacuations for Pulga, South Pine Zone, Old Magalia Zone and South Coutelenc Zone as of 10 a.m. Shelters opened at Oroville Nazarene Church at 9 a.m. and Neighborhood Church in Chico.

The blaze is concentrated in the Feather River Canyon off Highway 70 in Pugla, a town about 50 miles east of Chico, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced on Twitter. Multiple motorists have abandoned their vehicles.

Some of the patients were initially turned around during their evacuation because of gridlocked traffic and later airlifted to other hospitals, along with staff, Kinney said. 'There are dozens of strike teams that we're bringing in from all parts of the state'. Rescuers were trying to put them in other vehicles, he said.

Cal Fire tweeted that the fire was "very dangerous" and urged people to follow evacuation orders.

All in all, a roaring success. "It's a really good thing that everyone should be a part of". It's a great experience to have for the younger players in our team.

Officials said the blaze has consumed more than 26 square miles so far. Dry, windy conditions are making it hard to contain the fire.

A hospital and several schools were evacuated as thick grey smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away. Other patients were taken to Oroville Hospital in the city of Oroville.

Hospital spokeswoman Jill Kinney said all patients were evacuated.
