Danny Welbeck scored the 77th-minute victor, which gave Arsenal sole possession of first place in Group E. The Gunners haven't lost in their last 14 matches and have found their form under manager Unai Emery, a three-time victor of the Europa League with Sevilla.

Sokratis started the match- as the Islington Gazette revealed three hours before the game after speaking with a well-placed source.

Arsenal enjoyed plenty of possession from the outset although the hosts were reduced to long-range efforts from Carl Jenkinson, again starting in the unfamiliar role of left-back, and youngster Emile Smith Rowe.

"He was working well and he was having a good match", said Emery.

However, the point was enough to guarantee the north London side a place in the last 32 atop Group E on 10 points, with Sporting behind them on seven.

"This could be a break of something in the ankle", stated Emery.

OSU'S PATH: A 12-1 record, with a win over MI and a Big Ten championship, does not guarantee a spot in the playoff for Ohio State. UCF gave up a bunch of yards to Temple last week and stayed at No. 12 behind Kentucky, which was dominated by Georgia.

Arsenal midfielders Matteo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey were both visibly upset after Welbeck, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, went down after jumping to win a header.

Stephan Lichtsteiner played the ball into the 27-year-old in a crowded box.

And while Nelson may not be a ready-made replacement for Welbeck, Emery says he is keeping a keen eye on his progress.

The Gunners won their first three group games, but were held to a 0-0 draw by Sporting Lisbon last night at the Emirates.

Many of Welbeck's team-mates appeared distressed as he received lengthy treatment and needed an oxygen mask.

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil took to Twitter soon after the incident to wish his team mate well, saying: "Oh no. get well soon Danny".
