Gunman and 12 others dead in California bar shooting

The gunman died inside the bar, police said.

Captain Garo Kuredjian, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, said the shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill started at about 11:20 p.m.

"We have no idea if there is a terrorism link or not", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters.

It was the second mass shooting in less than two weeks, after a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue on October 27.

Police described the scene as "horrific" and said there was blood everywhere. He ordered flags flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.

Eyewitnesses report seeing a hooded gunman dressed in black opened fire on a crowd at a country dance bar holding a weekly "college night" in Southern California.

"I can't tell you much about the shooter at this point", Kuredjian said.

The killer also deployed a smoke device, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.

Long lived in Newbury Park, about 5 miles from the Borderline bar.

Long was "somewhat irate". Information on the victims has not yet been released.

Hours before the shooting, he shared a flier advertising the college country night on his Instagram page, writing: "See y'all tonight!"

The president of California State University, Northridge, said in a statement that Long was a former student at the school, most recently in 2016.

The last words Jason Coffman told his son, Cody Coffman, were "I love you", before he went to Borderline Bar and Grill.

"Firefighters and first responders are arriving on scene of a report of a shooting at an establishment in @CityofTO". Gunshots were heard even as officers were responding to the incident.
