Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, Democrats from Minnesota and MI respectively, will be the first Muslim women to serve in congress.

Omar will succeed US Rep. Keith Ellison, who gave up the safe seat in a heavily Democratic Minneapolis-area district to run for state attorney general.

Because Democrats will have more money, staff, and political leverage over congressional committees, increased efforts to launch investigations into President Trump's tax returns, which will contain information on his income and taxes, and his campaign's involvement with Russian Federation are expected.

When the new Congress convenes in January 2019, for the first time it will have at least one Muslim woman among its ranks.

Omar (36) also congratulated Ayanna Pressley, who became the first black woman to represent MA in Congress.

Kate Brown, who is bisexual, became the first openly LGBT person elected governor in 2016 when she won her OR race. "I can not wait to serve with you, inshallah", Omar, who also won her election, said on Twitter.

Anti-Muslim hate groups falsely attacked Omar and Tlaib as anti-Semites supporting terrorism. She came to the United States more than two decades ago as a refugee.

Stephen A. Smith: Duke Basketball Can Go Undefeated
Williamson followed with 28 points on 11-of-13 shooting despite playing just under 23 minutes due to first-half foul trouble. Duke: Marvin Bagley III held the previous mark for points by a freshman in his debut with 25.

Miski Omar, a high school senior who attended Omar's election night party, said she thinks Omar's election is inspirational for young women of color.

During her campaign, Omar focused on single-payer health care, gun control and immigration.

Asked what she would say if she has a chance to come face-to-face with Trump soon, she said "I would say that he is faced with an opportunity to lead".

The election of these women to Congress is a direct repudiation of the domestic and foreign policies of a country that's been hostile to migrants and refugees from a number of countries, including Somalia, and has funded Israel's occupation and destruction of Palestine.

Tlaib (D) is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and ran a progressive campaign.

Ilhan Omar handily beat her Republican opponent and will go on to the House to represent Minnesota's fifth district, which includes much of Minneapolis.
