State Department 'closely following' 2 journalists held in Tanzania

The officials - reportedly from Tanzania Immigration authority are said to have searched the pair's belongings and would not return their passports when asked.

Quintal sent a message Wednesday from her verified Twitter account saying she and her colleague were "being taken for interrogation by Tanzanian authorities and we don't know why?"

The country's Immigration Department said it had arrested them because they violated their stated objective of visit to Tanzania.

New York, November 8, 2018-The Committee to Protect Journalists today welcomed the release of Angela Quintal, CPJ's Africa program coordinator, and Muthoki Mumo, CPJ's sub-Saharan Africa representative, from detention in Tanzania and called for Tanzanian authorities to halt their ongoing crackdown against a free press. She is also a former national office bearer of the South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef).

"Angela Quintal and Muthoki Mumo traveled to Tanzania to understand the challenges facing the Tanzanian press and to inform the global public", Simon said.

CPJ's executive director Joel Simon has called for their immediate release. "The High Commissioner and his Kenyan diplomats will continue to engage with Tanzanian authorities until the passports are returned and all the facts have been established around the arrest", Dirco said.

Quintal tweeted before 1am on Tuesday morning that she and her colleague had been released. For now, Quintal and Mumo are well and will stay at their hotel, Mabaya said.

Both of their social media accounts were suspended after the dubious post on Quintal's account.

The journalists were detained on Wednesday by Tanzanian immigration officials while on a reporting mission for the CPJ.

Since his election three years ago, Tanzania's President John Magufuli has cracked down on independent media, closing down critical newspapers, while rights groups have protested against the imposition of restrictive laws on freedom of expression.
