Arsenal's progress into the knockout stage of the Europa League was marred by a suspected broken ankle for the England striker Danny Welbeck last night.

"When you are playing football, when you are playing in competitive matches, it can happen. The news is that we are going to wait - but we think it's a serious injury".

"He tells you exactly what he wants you to do, but gives you freedom to expose your talent".

"We worked well with very good commitment in a hard game".

Welbeck collapsed in pain after a collision in the Sporting penalty area 25 minutes into the game at the Emirates and immediately waved for medical attention as he writhed on the ground. He's helped us with his behaviour, with his quality and his capacity. We wish him all the best in his recovery.

Some of his team-mates were also visibly affected by the incident.

However, they have not lost since, are fifth in the Premier League, have won all three of their Europa League games and are into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Sporting ended the game with 10 men when ex-Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu was shown a straight red card after fouling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was clean through, although the hosts could not find a winning goal.

But Arsenal could not take advantage as Aubameyang blasted the resulting free-kick well over the crossbar. "We will know [more] about his injury tomorrow".

"Then the objective is to come back with us and grow with this experience".
