Democrats have expressed concern that Mr. Trump didn't tap Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has been overseeing the special counsel investigation, to the top temporary post.

Others have said that Whitaker's appointment is unconstitutional, since Trump didn't seek the Senate's advice and consent. Look for Whitaker to reduce Mueller's operating budget, pull lawyers and investigators now working on Mueller's team back to DOJ, refuse to authorize grand jury subpoenas or indictments, and/or push Mueller to wrap up the probe as soon as possible.

Whitaker's selection by Trump as acting attorney general drew sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who described it as an attempt by the president to undermine and possibly end Mueller's investigation. Before joining the Justice Department, Whitaker was openly critical of the Mueller investigation.

Hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of major US cities to call for protection of the special counsel charged with investigating ties between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign.

The attorneys general from OR and Washington have joined 16 of their Democratic colleagues in calling for Acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into contacts between President Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation.

Whitaker, speaking on CNN in 2017, said he had respect for Mueller and then went on to say he would be surprised if the special counsel had any concerns about the termination of Sessions and its effect on the investigation.

That Donald Trump is now in a stronger position because a loyalist is ready to take the reins of the Mueller investigation.

On Thursday, Toomey said he knew Sessions to be "a very good man", but that the attorney general has to have the full confidence of the president. In Naperville, their hastily sketched signs proclaimed messages like "Let Mueller do his job", "Defend the constitution", "Let justice be served", and "Nobody is above the law".

Some legal experts, including the husband of White House counsel Kellyanne Conway, have argued Whitaker's elevation is unconstitutional given he was not confirmed by the Senate.

Laura Bottorff, of Valparaiso, said she is afraid that Mueller's report will be hidden from the American people.

Toomey said he had no reason to think the Mueller probe would be disrupted.

"Have a discussion about getting this on the schedule, and let's get this wrapped up, that would be my preference", Toomey told reporters at an unrelated event in Emmaus. A person familiar with the matter said he got on the White House's radar via conservative circles in Iowa, his TV appearances and his connections with the Federalist Society and other conservative groups.
