"Rather, we want to ensure that China act responsibly and fairly in support of security and prosperity in each of our two countries", Pompeo said.

Mr. Pompeo, while interacting with the media, said, "President Trump has made it clear that the USA seeks a constructive and results-oriented relationship with China grounded in fairness, reciprocity and respect". Xi is to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump later this month at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires.

"The United States called on China to withdraw its missile systems from disputed features in the Spratly Islands, and reaffirmed that all countries should avoid addressing disputes through coercion or intimidation", the statement said. China expects the USA "to respect China's security interests in the Asia-Pacific, China's sovereignty and development interests", Yang said Friday.

The two sides should "properly manage differences and carefully prepare to ensure positive results in the Argentine meeting", politburo member Yang Jiechi told US national security adviser John Bolton in Washington, China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

"The United States is not pursuing a Cold War or containment policy with respect to China", U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a joint news conference.

Mattis made clear that this demand go unheeded by Washington, which insists it is acting under worldwide law to preserve access for it and others to the South China Sea.

Fault lines between the USA and China were on clear display Friday as senior officials challenged each other over the South China Sea, Taiwan, religious freedom and trade just weeks before President Donald Trump is set to meet with President Xi Jinping.

The Pentagon had previously declined to comment on a May report quoting unnamed sources with direct knowledge of USA intelligence reports as saying that the anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems had been deployed to Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef in April or early May. All three are also claimed by Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Beijing has steadily been building artificial islands and military installations to cement its claim to the highly contested territory. Pentagon Chief, James Mattis and Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe also took part in the talks. "We pressed China to live up to its past commitments in this area".

And a high-profile meeting could occur in the coming days, when U.S. Vice President Mike Pence travels to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Papua New Guinea.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis asserted US rights to freedom of navigation but also said the two sides should work together on areas of common interest.

China and the US are now locked in an ongoing trade war as each country has introduced tariffs on goods traded between each other.

The two countries must agree to keep conflicts between them under control or else risk "destroying hopes for the new world order", the former secretary of state warned.

It may be recalled that President Trump had slapped $250 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese goods, accusing Beijing of nefarious trading practices, prompting retaliatory measures.

Yang voiced hope for a quick resolution.

Yun Sun, a China expert at the Stimson Center think tank, said Beijing is uncertain about what exactly Trump wants out of a trade deal, but hopes that with USA midterm elections out of the way, the mercurial American president may be more inclined to reach a compromise. Wang told Kissinger that China believes the two countries could properly resolve the trade dispute through dialogue.
