United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Tuesday abruptly postponed a meeting with a top North Korean official in NY scheduled for Thursday, in a setback to peace talks between the two countries, AFP reported.

But the State Department said in a short statement on Wednesday that the officials would meet later "when our respective schedules permit".

"I think we have to look at it as a part of the process of reaching complete denuclearization and setting up a peace regime", Yonhap cited the unnamed official as saying. But we're not in any rush at all. "The sanctions are still on".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet with his North Korean counterpart in NY this week to continue discussions on the denuclearization of the regime, the State Department said Monday.

Trump suggested at a news conference Wednesday that a meeting between Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol, that was supposed to take place Thursday in NY would be rescheduled because of a conflict that he didn't explain.

In a statement, it added, "Ongoing conversations continue to take place", but did not elaborate.

"The United States remains focused on fulfilling the commitments agreed to by President Trump and Chairman Kim at the Singapore summit in June", it said.

The abrupt rescheduling raises questions about the prospects for continued negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.

Atwood also noted that North Korea's state-run news agency KCNA has recently put out aggressive messages saying the Kim regime only suspended its nuclear testing with the expectation that the USA would begin easing sanctions.

Woo also pointed out that the Trump administration will face growing pressure to take issue with North Korea's human rights record, which could further complicate Washington's denuclearization talks with Pyongyang.

At the beginning of July, the american secretary of State was thus returned empty-handed from a visit to North Korea, and the end of August, Donald Trump had cancelled at the last minute another planned trip of the minister to Pyongyang, recognizing for the first time the absence of sufficient progress.

Before that he also called off the Singapore summit before putting it back on.

Pompeo was supposed to travel to NY on Thursday to meet with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, State Department deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino emphasized that the postponement was "purely a matter of scheduling".
