Wildfires rage across California, killing at least five

United States President Donald Trump has said "gross mismanagement of forests" is to blame for two unchecked wildfires burning in California, where nine people were killed and hundreds of thousands forced to flee.

Paradise, which has a population of 26,000, has also been struck badly, with the blaze having grown to almost 140sq miles and destroyed around 6,500 structures.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation", Cal Fire Capt. Scott McLean told KTVU on Friday.

California fire officials said crews gave up fighting the flames Thursday and instead helped people get out alive.

TMZ first reported that Jenner's home in the Malibu hills had been destroyed.

On Friday morning, gruesomely burned cars littered the side of the road. In 1993, the Old Topanga Fire burned 16,800 acres and destroyed 369 homes, killing three. Around 150,000 people have also been evacuated from their homes.

At the hospital in Paradise, more than 60 patients were evacuated to other facilities.

More than 2,200 firefighters were battling the blaze, backed up by helicopters and water tankers.

About 500 miles (800 km) to the north, nine people were found dead in and around the Northern California town of Paradise, where more than 6,700 homes and businesses were burned down by the Camp Fire. The Butte County Sheriff's Office confirmed Friday at least five people have died.

"The whole town is burning", Bob Van Camp, a Paradise resident who escaped on his motorbike, told local TV channel Action News Now.

"Not one home will be left standing", he said.

By early Friday morning, there were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

At about 2:30 a.m. Friday, all evacuation orders in the city of Los Angeles were changed from mandatory to voluntary, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"This is a very risky wind driven fire". Traffic accidents turned roads into gridlock and residents abandoned vehicles and ran from the flames carrying children and pets, officials said.

Malibu, known as the home of many Hollywood stars, has about 13,000 residents and lies along 21 miles of coast at the southern foot of the mountain range.

Rapper Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian West are among those who have taken to social media to confirm that they are safe.

"Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home".

"You could feel the heat from the flames", said McMillen, who returned Friday and found his home intact but stinking of smoke.

Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro tweeted that he had abandoned his vast "Bleak House" museum collection of fantasy and horror memorabilia, while singer Etheridge said she had moved into a hotel.
