Brexit: DUP accuses May of breaking promises on Irish border

Some eurosceptics in her Conservative Party are already threatening to vote against the deal because it could lock Britain into a long-term customs arrangement with the EU.

The First Minister was speaking following a meeting of the British-Irish Council on the Isle of Man, which was also attended by Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones and Ireland's Leo Varadkar.

The DUP MP Sammy Wilson heaped further pressure on the government, telling the BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the letter was sent to the party but was put into the public domain by Downing Street.

But David Lidington, Mrs May's de facto deputy prime minister, said he hoped that once a deal was on the table MPs would rally behind it.

Mr Wilson told Sky News the prime minister is guilty of a "total betrayal" and had gone back on "the promises she made".

"I am clear that I could not accept there being any circumstances or conditions in which that "backstop to the backstop", which would break up the United Kingdom customs territory, could come into force".

She spoke out after "frank" exchanges with Cabinet Office minister David Lidington on the differences between the Scottish and United Kingdom governments over their approach to exiting the European Union (EU).

It comes as tensions are mounting between the DUP and the British Prime Minister over the future of Northern Ireland post-Brexit.

But this weekend senior European Union officials sent shockwaves through No 10 by rejecting May's plan, sparking fears that negotiations have broken down days before "no-deal" preparations costing billions need to be implemented. Both documents would then be published.

"I don't think it leaves it on shaky ground because of course the confidence and supply agreement was entered into at a time of great national instability, we wanted to see stability in the Government at that time and we also wanted to deliver on a Brexit vote that had been taken".

He continued: "It will no longer be a question of some hypothetical outcome, to which anybody might wish to add or subtract their own political preferences, but a pair of documents that will have been agreed and endorsed by the government of the United Kingdom, and by the 27 other governments of the member-states of the European Union, led by politicians of left, right and centre".
