In a stunning move, First Lady Melania Trump is calling for the firing of Deputy Security Adviser Mira Ricardel, who had been hand picked by National Security Advisor John Bolton.

In a rare public rebuke, the first lady's office said Ricardel "no longer deserves the honor of serving in this White House".

President Donald Trump is under pressure from his wife Melania to fire his deputy national security adviser over what two sources close to the White House said was the way Mrs Trump's trip to Africa was handled. One person familiar with the matter said Ricardel quarreled with the first lady's staff over seating on the plane and use of National Security Council resources.

President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to dismiss Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen after becoming impatient and frustrated with her approach to immigration.

The source cautioned Trump could still change his mind on the matter, but said he has grown tired of her in his push to harden the USA border with Mexico.

A senior Trump administration official speaking on condition of anonymity told the Guardian that Ricardel remained at the White House on Tuesday.

The Post reports that while she feels that way Chief of Staff John F. Kelly has been fighting to keep her.

Trump has angrily aired his frustrations with Nielsen's handling of border security during contentious meetings at the White House, claiming she isn't up to the task of fulfilling the campaign promises he made to curb illegal immigration.

Trump cancelled a planned trip with Nielsen this week to visit USA troops at the border in South Texas and told aides over the weekend that he wants her out as soon as possible, The Washington Post quoted the officials as saying on Monday.

According to CNN, the top White House aide was given some time to clear out her things but she was still seen in her office on Tuesday. She brought her concerns to the president earlier in 2018.

Ricardel, who previously worked in the commerce department, has been an integral part of Bolton's efforts to restructure the NSC.

"Well", she said, "some people, they don't work there anymore".

The biggest face-off appears to be between two key power centres, Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Advisor John Bolton. The president has reportedly already found a replacement for Kelly in Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff.

When asked yesterday about possible staff changes, Trump declined to comment on specifics, only telling reporters: "We'll be talking about it".
