Stung by criticism for not attending the event, the White House said Sunday that Trump didn't want to disrupt roadways with a last-minute motorcade.

On Saturday, Trump was criticized for failing to visit a second American cemetery about 60 miles outside of Paris because bad weather grounded the helicopter he planned to take.

However, he had particular fun with the president's failure to attend the 100th anniversary ceremony for Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I. In his opening monologue on The Late Show, Colbert did not seem surprised.

Ben Rhodes, who was deputy national security adviser for President Barack Obama, accused Trump of "blowing off honouring American servicemen who died for us" and said the White House should have had a fallback option.

It's unclear if Trump's White House plans for trips the same way Obama's did.

The US leader was heavily criticised for cancelling a trip to Belleau Wood battlefield in northern France on Saturday due to the rain, with some critics accusing him of disrespecting America's war dead.

Conservative MP and grandson of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill Nicholas Soames called Mr Trump "pathetic" and "inadequate".

The U.S. Secret Service typically requires a good level of visibility to transport the president by helicopter, yet the president's detractors and some in his own party seized on the cancellation to accuse Trump of lacking respect for fallen soldiers and the military.

Also not among them: Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also arrived solo.

Mr Trump was in Paris for events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

But Trump did give a speech in the rain at the American Commemoration Ceremony at Suresnes Cemetery, where he commented on the rain.

However the President did courageous Parisian showers earlier today to attend another solemn ceremony honoring veterans of what was called the Great War. Meanwhile, the United States leader stressed again that Europe should do more on defense burden sharing.

Trump's feud with Emmanuel Macron boiled on Sunday as the French leader forcefully denounced nations "looking after their own interests" and decried nationalist policies like the ones Donald Trump has embraced.
