John Lewis has become synonymous with Christmas adverts, guaranteed to have us balling into a tin of Roses before breakfast or when we catch the ad between soaps. The switch might be a reference to the supposed role for Elton John in the retailer's forthcoming Christmas ad.

Rumours around the festive campaign are rife, with Radio X presenter Chris Moyles last week creating a spoof ad featuring the John song Rocket Man.

The first three quarters of the ad are pretty baffling, as you wonder why Elton John's life story has anything whatsoever to do with Christmas, and whether the whole thing is just a cynical ploy to get everyone hyped for his upcoming film, Rocketman.

Sir Elton John is the star of this year's John Lewis Christmas advert, but the reaction to it on social media has been decidedly mixed.

Fans of the new John Lewis ad included former MP and Strictly Come Dancing star Ed Balls, who said it was "totally brilliant", and TV presenter Susanna Reid who responded: "Absolutely love it".

The festive ad tells how one gift in particular inspired and influenced the course of a little boy's life.... and that little boy just happens to be Elton John, with the soundtrack using his classic track, Your Song. The young Elton has learned a skill that will stay with him for life.

I'm not crying, you are.
