"A frustration I have is that a lot of people increasingly seem to equate an advertising business model with somehow being out of alignment with your customers", Zuck told Time. It's often been reported in the press that Apple chief Tim Cook and Zuckerberg are not mutual fans of each other, trading snipes about various subjects, including online privacy.

Facebook this summer had a public relations firm attempt to blame financier George Soros for the rise of groups opposing it, reports the New York Times. Zuckerberg, in a conference call with reporters Thursday, repeatedly claimed he did not know that the company had been hired, trying to distinguish Facebook's culture with repeated references to "Washington D.C., firms".

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Cheryl Sandberg were both so bent on growing Facebook that they "ignored warning signs and then sought to hide them from public view", the report said.

Facebook also stated it never asked its public affairs agency, Definers, to "to pay for or write articles on Facebook's behalf - or to spread misinformation".

The company has faced criticism for lacking transparency in how and why it removes content. Facebook earlier this year announced some of its protocols for removing content.

The board of directors issued a statement backing the efforts of Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg in responding to influence campaigns.

"We've acknowledged publicly on many occasions -- including before Congress -- that we were too slow to spot Russian interference on Facebook, as well as other misuse", it said. "Overall Sheryl is doing great work for this company, she's been a great partner to me and will continue to be a great partner to me".

Soros, who is often the target of anti-Semitism, has been critical of Facebook before.

The body will take some important content monitoring decisions out of the hands of Facebook. But to suggest that they knew about Russian interference and either tried to ignore it or prevent investigations into what had happened is grossly unfair.

Facebook hired a Republican opposition research firm to discredit activists critical of the social network, according to the report. It also tapped its business relationships, lobbying a Jewish civil rights group to cast some criticism of the company as anti-Semitic.

Gaspard concluded his letter by asking Sandberg for a sit-down to hear what steps the company plans to take to "remediate the damage done by this deeply misguided - and risky effort carried out at Facebook's behest".

The world's most popular social media platform has been on the back foot for months, including over the allegation that data from millions of Facebook users was abused by the consultancy Cambridge Analytica to help drive Donald Trump to the White House.
