Schumer said Wednesday he's confident Nelson will win re-election against Scott, who's Florida's governor. Dick Durbin of IL to continue in their positions for another term. They installed Rep. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a close ally of President Trump, said Thursday that he has not been interviewed to replace General John Kelly as White House chief of staff, and that he is focused on his new role as the House Minority Leader in the next Congress.

Democrats have a laundry list of other matters they want to investigate - the president's tax returns, possible violations of the Emoluments Clause, internal administration communications that led to the immigrant family separation policy at the US border - but have said they know they will need to be methodical and prioritize.

That became unnecessary when Republicans lost the House on Election Day, as the race for minority leader is considered much lower stakes than the race to be speaker.

Mr. Jordan had said Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Ryan should bear the blame for election losses last week because voters felt that Republicans didn't live up to their promises.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of OH says the GOP lost its House majority in the midterm election because it didn't deliver on promises to secure the U.S. -Mexico border, fund President Donald Trump's wall and replace the Obama health care law. But since his election, he has changed course, saying instead the money must come from Congress and United States taxpayers. Though the tax cut lowered overall rates, it hurt wealthy taxpayers and property owners in high-tax, Democrat-run jurisdictions because it capped the state and local tax (SALT) deduction at $10,000.

While frustration at upward mobility is a widespread gripe among House Democrats, and even some of Pelosi's supporters acknowledge there is not a deep bench to replace her, no one else is yet running for House Speaker.

Her opponents, eager for new leadership, are arguing she does not have enough support to pass a full House vote.

With the spectacle of a divided Congress imminent, McConnell heralded his party's increased majority in the Senate, but reiterated that he would try and find common ground with the Democrats.
