Federer was more concerned with the way he rediscovered his form to convincingly beat Thiem, admitting his head had not been right in a straight sets defeat by Nishikori. The following game was also very long and Thiem converted the fifth break point after a double fault from Nishikori, closing the set with a forehand victor in the following game after 41 minutes.

The Swiss was looking sharp on serve and although Thiem cracked a backhand victor, Federer would close out the game and set with an ace, the third consecutive service game he fired an ace to take the game.

Federer has a positive head-to-head record (4-1) against Anderson but the 32-year-old South African won their last meeting at Wimbledon after coming back from two sets down.

The Swiss continued to hold easily, winning his following two service games to love and 15, respectively as he claimed a 3-1 lead.

Thiem managed to break the Nishikori serve for the first time in the second set to take a 4-3 lead. After missing that opportunity, Nishikori's morale dropped, and Thiem used that, by taking his serve and closing this set in the next game.

After his defeat on Sunday, Federer spoke of the difficulty he has had trying to find a practice court that matches the speed of the fast indoor showcourt at the O2 Arena.

"I think Thiem winning maybe helped me come into this match a little more relaxed", Federer admitted after the match. "I don't know. But, yeah, I just didn't play well this week". "I think we can not complain about it because we have a very nice life with that". That was a bit disappointing, and Kei played better in the end.
