The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation's highest civilian honor, which may be awarded by the President to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. It was given to seven people, including three posthumously. Six of the nine justices now serving on the U.S. Supreme Court, including newest member Brett Kavanaugh, attended the White House ceremony. She has also supported Jewish schools, Holocaust memorial organizations, and Israeli military personnel and veterans, the White House noted.

The Adelsons gave Trump's presidential campaign a $30 million boost in the final months of the 2016 race.

They were major proponents of Trump's decision past year to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and formally move the U.S. embassy there, which the president recognized during Friday's ceremony. Sheldon Adelson was with Trump on midterm election night last week.

Miriam Adelson said she is "deeply humbled and moved by this exceptional honor".

Other recipients today include Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). Her husband died in 2016 of natural causes.
