UKs May sees no alternative to her Brexit plan

But while Theresa May's leadership has been called into question, Conservative MPs across the region say they will still back her plan for Brexit.

She said the backstop is an "insurance policy", adding: "Both sides can say yes we agree that there are arrangements in place, that a deal that provides for the people of Northern Ireland and therefore that backstop is no longer necessary".

Under Conservative rules, a confidence vote in the leader is triggered if 15 percent of Conservative lawmakers-currently 48-write a letter to the party's 1922 Committee of backbenchers, which oversees leadership votes. You were never going to get that.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he did not believe the text met the needs of the country, while the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is propping up the Conservative Party minority government through a confidence and supply agreement, has vowed to vote down the deal.

Instead, Mr Barclay - who supported Leave in 2016 - will focus on the domestic legislation to prepare Britain for its scheduled departure in March.

"The withdrawal agreement we have been presented with is unacceptable to leave and remain voters alike".

Raab said: "If we can not close this deal on reasonable terms we need to be very honest with the country that we will not be bribed and blackmailed or bullied and we will walk away". Ms Andrea Leadsom, who is convening the group, Mr Liam Fox, Mr Chris Grayling, Ms Penny Mordaunt and Mr Michael Gove are trying to draft an alternative plan that they can support and so stay in the government, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Earlier this week, May announced that the Cabinet had approved a draft Brexit agreement with the European Union after five hours of talks and that the deal would be submitted to the parliament for review.

May will be traveling to Brussels to meet with EU leaders before an emergency European Council summit on November 25.

On Friday evening, it emerged that Mrs Leadsom hopes to work with the four other ministers to change a specific part of the draft withdrawal deal regarding what is known as the Irish backstop - one of the main sticking points in talks with Brussels.

The deal prompted the start of a tumultuous few days for Mrs May, with two senior ministers and several other junior ministers and aides resigning.

Asked if he had confidence in May, Gove, who is famous for sinking former foreign minister Boris Johnson's leadership bid in 2016, told reporters: "I absolutely do".

Raab told the Andrew Marr Show on BBC that the Brexit deal achieved was "fatally flawed" but could be remedied by just "two or three points" being changed.

"The job of prime minister is to make tough decisions which are not always black or white".

To succeed, she must find support among parliamentarians belonging to the main opposition Labour Party and other political groupings who may yet be persuaded to vote in favour of the deal in a bid to avoid the United Kingdom leaving the European Union with no deal at all, a so-called "cliff-edge" Brexit.

"The biggest risk of no deal is taking a bad deal to the House of Commons ... it is very important to take the action now".
