The NHL will also realign its two divisions in the West for the 2021-22 season: Seattle will play in the Pacific, home to its closest geographic rivals like Vancouver, Calgary and San Jose, and the Arizona Coyotes will move to the Central Division.

The city of Seattle has been awarded an NHL expansion team, the league announced Tuesday. The Seattle Totems were a pro hockey franchise in the Western Hockey League from 1958-74, then in the Central Hockey League from 1974-1975.

"Seattle's one of the fastest-growing cities in the country", NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said recently.

Earlier this year, the Seattle Times polled fans over the course of a month asking what their vote would be regarding the team name.

'Friends' May Not Be Leaving Netflix After All
Once the clock strikes midnight on 2018, Friends will be removed from the streaming service. However, the future of Friends on Netflix is still uncertain.

"We believe it will be one of the finest arenas in the world", said Tod Leiweke, president of Seattle Hockey Partners. The nine-member executive committee that heard Seattle's presentation in October voted unanimously to move the matter to the full board. The team will follow the same expansion draft rules as Vegas did in 2017, selecting a player from each club (except for Vegas) for 30 total players.

There are also plans to build a $70-million practice facility. Leiweke left the Lightning in 2015 to become the COO of the NFL and didn't have any interest in leaving the league office until the project in Seattle began to gain traction.

"The league's expansion decision was only made possible because Seattle will possess the three pillars essential to the success of any franchise: terrific committed ownership, a thriving market and a state-of-the-art venue", Bettman said. A hockey franchise would provide those newcomers a team to rally around, much like what happened when the Sounders of Major League Soccer arrived in 2009 - the last team added to the city's sport landscape. With just 230 kilometres separating the two cities, Seattle will ease the Canucks' brutal travel schedule and create the first natural geographic rivalry in franchise history. He said simply that expansion is appropriate when it adds value to the league.

"We're not looking right now and I think for the foreseeable future at any further expansion", Bettman said.
