Trump said on Saturday he would give formal notice of his intention to terminate NAFTA, giving six months for lawmakers to approve the new U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

"I will be formally terminating NAFTA shortly", the president said of the trilateral agreement he and his supporters have long loved to hate.

Trump, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto signed the new U.S. -Canada-Mexico Agreement at the start of G20 meetings Friday in Argentina.

The U.S. president, along with Canadian and Mexican leaders, signed the new deal, the U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), on Friday after more than a year of intense negotiations.

"It's disappointing but not surprising" that the USA president would try to force Congress to reinstate the status quo of #NAFTA, instead of working constructively with Congress to improve his proposed agreement, Henry Connelly, a spokesman for House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, said on Twitter Sunday morning.

That would trigger a six-month waiting period before the United States could leave the pact - during that time, U.S. lawmakers would be asked to approve the new deal signed on Friday with America's neighbors.

"We appreciate the administration's continued efforts to modernize our nation's existing trade agreements and help grow USA automotive manufacturing with new agreements like the USMCA", said Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who is presumed to be the next speaker of the House of Representatives, indicated Friday that House Democrats weren't ready to give their support to this deal yet.

"For these reasons, I oppose NAFTA 2.0, and will vote against it in the Senate unless President Trump reopens the agreement and produces a better deal for America's working families".

"I think this new U.S. Mexico Canada trade agreement is great".

It will require approval from each country's legislature, and in the U.S., Democrats in Congress, in particular, have voiced concerns about its labor and environmental protections. "It's been a disaster for the United States", Trump said as he left the G-20 summit.
