Fortnite dev Epic Games is launching a Steam rival, teases bigger reveal

Epic struck gold with their free-to-play game, but it's seen their other games take a back seat.

In an attempt to make its store a more attractive proposition for developers and content creators, Epic will also implement a "Support-A-Creator program" that aims to bring influencers and marketers together.

The head-to-head first-person shooter Unreal Tournament was a fan favorite in the '90s and '00s, while Epic licensed out the engine that powered it as a popular tool for other developers.

There's "no tiers or thresholds" in the Epic Games Store revenue split. Some games from these publishers get published on Steam because of Steam's reach.

Last week, Valve announced changes to the revenue split within the Steam Store, cutting its take as a game's profit steadily increases. However, you won't be excluded if you use Unreal 4. However, the number of games on offer, at least initially, will be much lower.

It is unclear how gamers will benefit from the Store as Epic Games has not revealed anything about the Store's functionality and features. Epic's new plan removes these milestone requirements, offering a generous 88% for all developers opting into its platform, with its 12% take undercutting Steam's lowest by 8%. Because of the high volume of Fortnite transactions, we can process store payments, serve bandwidth, and support customers very efficiently.

That does make one wonder what does quality mean to Epic Games in this case, especially when Steam is overrun with many games of dubious quality, and stores like GOG get complaints about not letting good games onto the storefronts at times.

Steam is a massive platform and it's hard to imagine Epic will wipe it out completely, but they're making the right steps to counter Valve's goliath sales machine. Will you be picking up games from the Epic Games Store from now on?

Epic's Game Store will be launching later this month and the store will be accessible both through Epic Games launcher and on the web.
