One child dead, 45 people hurt in Arkansas charter bus crash

The crash occurred about 2:40 a.m. and Arkansas State Police said some of the injured were found trapped inside the bus.

First responders are on the scene of a charter bus crash that left one child dead. As many as 40 others were injured.

One child is dead and at least 45 other individuals (updated from release of 5:47 AM), a lot of them children, are reported to be injured, as the result of the crash. The driver of the vehicle is still alive and is being questioned by police.

Local Memphis news station WHBQ reported that the Orange Mound Youth League (from the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee) had been playing in an All-Star game in Dallas on Sunday night.

WHBQ reported that the vast majority of patients were taken to two hospitals: Arkansas Children's Hospital and Saline Memorial.

Authorities haven't talked about the cause of the crash that happened under the cloak of darkness. The heavily damaged bus came to a rest after tumbling down a steep embankment next to the crook of a sharp bend on an off-ramp.

No information was immediately released about the severity of the injuries.

Police say one child was killed in the Monday morning accident along Interstate 30 near Benton, which is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock.

At least 20 patients were being treated at the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock and three people were in critical condition. A hospital spokeswoman said she couldn't provide any details, citing privacy laws.

Orange Mound was created after the Civil War by and for African-Americans, and black-owned businesses flourished there until desegregation enabled residents to live elsewhere.

The victims of the crash were team therapist Dayna Brons; players Parker Tobin, Logan Schatz, Jaxon Joseph, Stephen Wack, Adam Herold, Logan Hunter, Logan Boulet, Evan Thomas, Conner Lukan and Jacob Leicht; head coach Dary Haugan; play-by-play announcer Tyler Bieber; driver Glen Doerksen; assistant coach Mark Cross; and intern Brody Hinz.
