President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Thursday night to attack the media at the same time a bomb threat was called in to New York City's Time Warner Center, home to the CNN offices, which were evacuated.

The call was made at around 10pm Eastern time (3am Friday morning United Kingdom time) as CNN switched briefly to pre-taped programming before cutting to live shots of newscasters, employees and onlookers standing behind police barricades outside the building.

The caller reportedly claimed there were five bombs in the building.

News of the threat was communicated earlier on Twitter by CNN anchor Brian Stetler.

CNN said several fire alarm bells signaling an evacuation rang inside its newsroom shortly after 10:30pm.

Before allowing employees to return to work, the NYPD confirmed that a police investigation was taking place at Columbus Circle but said that the threat had not yet been substantiated.
